The IPENZ Transportation Group's Workshop and Technical Conference is New Zealand's premier forum for the traffic engineering and transportation planning community. It is intended to stimulate debate and collaboration amongst peers. Over 150 professionals attend the annual
event, which has been running for over 30 years. At the Workshop on Monday and Tuesday short remits, will stimulate debate on issues and
allow practical solutions to be developed. At the Technical Conference on Wednesdays longer papers will be presented. There will be plenty of
opportunity for discussion after both remits and papers. A choice of technical tours will be available on Tuesday afternoon, giving hands-on
experience of facilities that work, explained by local experts involved in their design and implementation. Trade exhibits will provide an
opportunity to view new technology, and to make contact with the providers of innovative products and services. A traditional highlight of the
conference is the workshop dinner, scheduled for Tuesday night. The winner of the prestigious 3M Traffic Safety Innovation Award will be
announced at the dinner.

Transportation professionals are increasingly asked to balance complex and often conflicting issues of safety, sustainability, public health, accessibility, land development, tourism, population growth, and changing demographics. The best solutions to these issues come from co-operation and collaboration between professionals. We learn from each other and from continual improvement. Some call such opportunities mistakes. The key reason the Transportation Conference was developed was to allow us to solve issues together. Back to the Future will encompass the early conference format of smaller groups and input from participants. Share knowledge – regain the edge.
Anyone with an interest in transportation and road safety:
• Traffic engineers
• Transportation planners
• Road controlling authority staff and managers
• Pedestrian and cycling officers and advocates
• Architects
• Planners
• Consultants
• Transportation decision makers from central and local government
• Asset and maintenance managers
and road safety co-ordinators

An icebreaker event is planned for Sunday evening, which will involve a ride up the gondola to the skyline, luge and other exciting activities. This will be a “not to miss” evening where you get to meet fellow delegates and “get into the spirit” of Back to the Future. Transport departs from the hotel at 5.00pm.
Cost: Inclusive for Delegate Registration Fee, excluding single day tickets and exhibitor tickets
Extra Tickets: $75.00 + GST
The purpose of the Workshop is to advance the practice of traffic engineering and transportation planning by providing a forum for the discussion of ideas, problems, successes and failures. The emphasis of the Workshop is on the practical "nuts and bolts" of professional practice, and how to get the best results for the resources available. The workshop will benefit from active participation, and the presentation of remits, which will be circulated to attendees prior to the Workshop. Remits - short presentations (about 5 minutes followed by questions and discussion) exploring current problems faced by the industry, and practical solutions. Priority will be given to remits that encourage discussion over those which simply supply information.
Workshop Topic Areas:
• Traffic Management
• Road and roadside design for safety
• Meeting needs of principal road user groups
• Intergrating transport infrastructure and land-use
• The transportation profession

This will be a 3 Bridges Tour: a circuit exploring the past and present transportation and development issues, around the Frankton, Lake Hayes, and Arrow Basin area. The Tour will last three hours and take in afternoon tea at the Bungy Bridge.
The gala dinner on Tuesday night will be held out at beautiful historic Arrowtown. The living historic town of Arrowtown was ‘Born of Gold’ in 1862. Breathtaking scenery and four very distinct seasons attract visitors from around the globe. In true IPENZ Transportation Conference style, you can expect an event that will be interactive, with lots of fun, entertainment, fine food and wine planned. Transport will depart from the hotel for this event at 5.30pm.
“I’ve attended countless nights around the world as part of our annual conference, and I’ve never had such a fantastic night as this one in Arrowtown…it turned out to be the highlight of the trip…an evening we will never forget!” ALM Australia

The Technical Conference will have the largest number of papers we have had so far and all will be of high quality. They will cover all aspects of our work including Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning and Policy, Safety, Road Pricing, Traffic Congestion and Data Collection. There will be contributions from our experienced members as well as some of our younger Group members. The papers will be formally presented and made available to delegates as a printed set. We would encourage all participants to stay the extra day for what will be a memorable event.
Authors will be competing for four Awards:
The NZAA award for the best Technical Paper.
The Chairman’s prize for the best Technical Note.
The Management Committee’s prize for the best Presentation, and
The Young Authors Award for those 35 years and under.
