How to get there
Flying into Queenstown is an experience all in itself; once you
have flown alongside the Southern Alps you will get a preview
of the beautiful scenery of the Southern Lakes area - from the
snow capped mountains to the glistening lakes. Flight time from
Christchurch, the South Island's gateway, is about 45 minutes
by jet. We have negotiated some fixed flights to Queenstown. These are

KEYNOTE PRESENTER - Mr Joeg Beckmann - Executive Director, European Safety Council
Joeg Beckman is currently the Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council. Jorg speaks six languages, has extensive qualifications and experience in sociology, youth research, spatial planning, development planning and comparison of transportation delivery and outcomes between the USA and Europe. Jorg skills also include direction and guidance to international Non Government Organisations (NGO), transport research on networks, extensive experience in road transport planning and engineering as well as considerable knowledge of monitored over some five years of the EU and UNECE road transport legislation. Jorg is currently in Brussels, Belgium and has responsibility for the management of the Council with currently over 31 research institutes and non-governmental organisations, 200 Independent experts and 11 secretariat staff members. He has developed and launched various Europe-wide programmes to reduce transport fatalities and injuries. Worked specifically on Southern, Eastern and Central Europe, traffic law enforcement, driving licensing, infrastructure safety and the protection for vulnerable road users. Joeg has worked with UNECE Working Parties 1 and 29 and managed ETSC Working Parties in areas such as “evaluation of national road safety policies” and “improving crash data collection and interpretation”. Jorg has represented the road safety research community in the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council and developed a road transport research agenda for the EU. His work in multi-stakeholder forums such as CARS 21 and on EU safety legislation in non-road modes is ongoing.

Kate McMahon MSc(Econ)- Head of Road Safety Strategy Division, Great Britain Department for Transport
Kate McMahon has recently retired from her position as Head of the Road Safety Strategy Division in the Great Britain Department for Transport, where her responsibilities included the safety of vulnerable road users, delivery of the Road Safety Strategy, and the management of the road safety research programme as well as a programme of demonstration projects. Kate was responsible for the development of the Government’s Casualty Reduction Target for 2010 and had a major role in the development of the Road Safety Strategy that was published in March 2000. She was also responsible for the monitoring of progress towards the UK target. Kate managed the first three-year review of the strategy, which was published in April 2004. Kate is currently part of the working group for the project on “Achieving ambitious road safety Targets.” Kate has provided advice on road safety internationally including presenting at seminars and conferences in the Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Cyprus, India, and Australia. She represented the UK at the UN meetings on Global Road Safety in April 2004, and took part in the policy forum on road safety at the TRB conference in Washington, USA in January 2005. Kate is currently engaged on work in support of Global Road Safety initiatives for the FIA Foundation and the UK Department for International Development through the Global Transport Knowledge Partnership.
Anders Lie - Head of Road Safety Strategy Division, Great Britain Department for Transport
Specialist in Traffic Safety, Swedish Road Administration
Since 1995
Anders Lie has been a specialist in traffic safety at the Swedish Road Administration. In 1995, he gained a Licentiate Degree from the Faculty of Medicine at Stockholm University. Between 1989 and 1995, Anders was a private consultant in photogrammetry, accident investigation and traffic safety. In 1983, he gained a BA in Architectural Conservation from the Institute for Conservation at Göteborg University. At the Road Administration Anders has taken part in the development of the Vision Zero strategy for traffic safety. He has also built up the system for in depth studies of fatal crashes that are performed in Sweden since 1998.. Anders has played a key role in the development of the European New Car Assessment Program. He has been the Swedish representative on the Euro NCAP board from the start. Seat belt reminders have always been a key interest for Anders. The work has played a major role in the introduction of efficient seat belt reminders in Europe. The analysis of the effectiveness of Electronic Stability Control is an activity that has influenced traffic safety in Sweden. In a few years the fitment rate has gone from 15% to 85%. Anders has published over 20 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals, covering mainly traffic safety and especially evaluation of new safety technologies.
Superintendent Harry Hayes - Victorian Police
Superintendent I.W. (Harry) Hayes joined the Victoria Police Force in 1970. He holds an Associate Diploma of Police Studies, Bachelor of Police Studies and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration. In January 2006 he was awarded the Australian Police Medal (APM) for services to road safety. During his career he has performed duties as an operational police officer, criminal investigator. The predominant amount of his career has been spent at various levels within the traffic environment. He spent 3 years as an investigating officer in the then Accident Investigation Section - now the Major Collision Investigation Group. Since July 1993, (initially as a Chief Inspector) he has acted in his current capacity as State Traffic Advisor. In this portfolio he is required to maintain liaison with all key traffic stake holders both within the State and interstate; also to assist in the co-ordination of traffic police activity throughout the State of Victoria. He is also required to represent the Victoria Police on various external working parties.
He has been responsible for developing and implementing the traffic plans for such events as the Olympic Soccer games played held in Melbourne as part of the 2000 Olympic Games which were staged in Sydney Australia, the World Economic Forum (Melbourne 2000) and the Commonwealth Games (Melbourne 2006) In 1996 he was nominated as "Team Leader" of a 3 man group (comprising of one other Victorian and one New South Wales Police Officer, to travel to New Zealand to undertake a Peer Review of the New Zealand Police Traffic Enforcement program. The initial visit to New Zealand was conducted during March 1996. Since that date, (as recently as 2006) he has revisited that country on numerous occasions for the purposes of conducting further reviews, training and other duties associated with road safety on behalf of New Zealand Police.

Professor Ian Johnston Director, Monash University Accident Research Centre
Ian Johnston is a psychologist with a PhD in human factors. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and is the Immediate Past President of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia. Ian’s history in road safety stretches back to 1972, with the Australian federal government, the Victorian state government, an R&D company and academia. Ian was appointed Director of the internationally renowned Monash University Accident Research Centre in May 2001. He has advised regional and national governments in several countries on road safety strategy and policy and has a keen interest in technology transfer within the Asia-Pacific region.Ian has won several awards, both national and international, for his work in safety and has published extensively.
MC Rodney Bryant
Rodney Bryant, ageing tv matinee idol, now works for the Dunedin City Council as their media liaison man. He has been a motorist for 47 years and once flitted round Wellington and Christchurch for a couple of years on a 150cc Vespa motor scooter -without falling off. The best piece of motoring advice he ever received was from his Dad who told him "all accidents are caused by not being able to stop in time" - a remarkably accurate simplification of the art of driving safely."

Cancellation Policy
Should you be unable to attend once you have registered, you may reassign your registration to another person. Please note you must advise the Conference Secretariat on 03-352-5598 or email glenda@hardingconsultants.co.nz
Registration cancellations will not be accepted unless made in writing. Cancellations made on or before Friday 28 July 2006 will be refunded less 30% to cover administration costs. As interest in this conference is so high and space is limited, no refunds will be given after this date.

Set your alarms early because we’re going sailing on the TSS Earnslaw on the spectacular Lake Wakatipu. Enjoy a 45 minute cruise and a traditional High Country Breakfast at Walter Peak Station, followed by a leisurely stroll through their beautiful gardens; including a fascinating farm tour, which includes a very clever dog trial and shearing. Just because you’ve experienced shearing before doesn’t mean you’ve experienced it “Walter Peak style” – believe me it’s worth it!!!
